Starting out in life as a mother at 17 and living as a single mother for the better part of 6 years, I faced every challenge you can think of while wearing the hat of a parent, student, and employee simultaneously. It was an experience that brought me heartache, worry, and doubt, but also a tremendous amount of personal growth, reflection, and perseverance. I credit many of my early experiences with where I am now, not only as a mother but as a strong, confident woman paving the way toward a writing career that will provide for my growing family.
I now have two children — my daughter recently turned 10 and my son is a 3-year-old ball of unrelenting energy. I am married to my best friend of nearly 16 years, a man whose timing in my life was unexpected yet perfect in every way. In late 2012, he returned home for a visit after his second deployment as a Seabee with the United States Navy, and the rest was history. We were wed in April of 2013 and spent the first 2.5 years of our marriage at his duty station in Southern California before returning to our home state of Washington in the fall of 2015.
The transition from the Navy has been another challenge — leaving our incredible friends and a certain way of life behind was hard — but it has been something I and my family have faced together. Perseverance and faith in the universe have been a large theme in continuing to reestablish and finally plant roots for my family, and I am grateful to have such an amazing partner by my side through it all.
I also credit much of my ambition and the decision to pursue my writing career to the unwavering support of my husband. Without his encouragement, I would have likely taken a more “stable” path with my education and career. Seeing my passion and potential, he urged me to follow my dream and never look back and that is exactly what I have done. The road has been bumpy, but I am digging deep into my education and progression with my craft and enjoying each step of the journey along the way.
When I’m not hard at work on my novel and other writing projects, I enjoy reading, relaxing with a cup of my favorite salted caramel tea, dance parties with my kids, chasing the sunrise on my morning walks, family game nights, and catching up on good movies and TV shows.
Taking care of my family and living in the moment with them is one of my greatest joys and I take my role of wife and mother just as seriously as my role as a writer.
I am currently working on my debut novel, so keep your eyes peeled for future details!
